Britney Spears is a pop singer of the 21st century, a famed celebrity and sex symbol of her generation. She debuted in 1998, and with short breaks, she has been in the American pop scene ever since. Spears has released four albums so far, and starred in a romantic movie (“Crossroads”). She married Kevin Federline in 2004, and gave birth to their first child in 2005. Britney Spears plans to return with a new album in 2006.

What is more important in Britney Spears than her career is the impact she had on her fans and young adults of the same age. At the beginning of her career, in 1998, Britney emphasized the importance of values that had been rare in America at that time, starting with sexual abstinence. Her songs and interviews, and in general, her image tried to set a positive role model for her generation. With the increasing fame and wealth, her role as a good example slowly diminished.

After 2000, Britney Spears had “grown up,” and became involved in various scandals, such as the highly publicized breaking up with Justin Timberlake, her long-time boyfriend, and the kissing with Madonna on the 2003 MTV Music Awards show. She lost some of her significance with giving up her alleged “beliefs” in true love and virginity, but she still remains one of the most popular pop idols of this century
